Head of Content - Roadtrippers

The VP Content will be responsible for all content production within Roadtrippers with the goal to make Roadtrippers into the #1 brand and destination for road trip content.

As part of recent reworking of strategy, we have made the decision to make all Roadtrippers content ‘boots on the ground’, and have been developing a large network of premium original content contributors to help scale this. ‘Boots on the Ground’ gets us better information than most of our content farm based competitors, it gets us a first person perspective that is more relevant in 2019, drives inbound linking and use of our unique assets, and helps us build brand and authority.

We have used this to revamp our magazine ‘lifestyle’ content, but have not yet tackled our more practical, useful ‘guides’ content, at least in the digital form, though we have been working with a major travel publisher to release a Roadtrippers guide book in the near future.

The next step is to rebuild our ‘guides’ strategy/production and content for the North American road tripper, making it is clearly better than anything else on line. We firmly believe in a 10X content strategy, where Roadtrippers becomes the leader in answering the questions most important to readers (as presented here) and we need a leader who shares our vision.

The VP Content will primarily focus on strategy and production for four practical guides content types:

  • Trip Guides
  • Books (produced as a joint venture collaboration with our publisher)
  • Editorial on points of interest
  • How-to/content marketing
  • Syndicated content from our publisher partner

Secondarily, the VP Content will help steer and advise our editors working on:

  • Magazine ‘lifestyle’ content
  • Branded and Sponsored Content
  • Brand Communications 

Duties include:

  • Strategy work to help ‘10X’ our new guides content
  • Planning and prioritizing guides production based on growth opportunities identified alongside the marketing team
  • Directly commissioning the production of Guides content, at scale
  • Working with our physical books publisher to help steer their strategy, production and voice
  • Managing the lead editor for the magazine, and helping to steer its direction and growth.
  • Managing the Places Editor, who focuses on individual POI content
  • Working alongside the branded content editor to advise in the production of branded guides
  • Using travel guide content to directly promote the sale of Roadtrippers PLUS, our premium trip planner.
  • Writing occasional features.
  • Reporting on performance and KPI’s
  • Overseeing global content production budgets
  • Growing readership through use of all tools available.
  • Working with the CEO and editorial team to constantly update and fine tune strategy

This role can be based anywhere in the United States but will require frequent travel both to Cincinnati and the Midwest, in addition to other points-of-interest across the country. This position precludes outside freelance work by the VP Content, except for personal use or where approved by the CEO.

The ideal candidate must love the open road, discovering not just tourist attractions, but the stories and people behind them, as well as open-minded and honest perspectives about the endless ways humanity lives and dreams in America. A love for vehicular-based travel is also critical: at its heart, Roadtrippers.com isn't just about the destination, but the places in between. Extra consideration will be given to candidates with experience in the travel sector and, in particular, those who have experience producing this type of content for any of the leading brands in this vertical.
